In 2025, Encounter Theatre is excited to launch Stories Begin Here, an innovative program designed to inspire, educate, and support playwrights and dramaturgs from diverse cultural backgrounds across Western Australia.

This initiative offers six distinct streams tailored to writers at various stages of their careers, fostering a vibrant community of storytellers.

Collaborating with esteemed partners—including Black Swan State Theatre Company, The Blue Room Theatre, and Centre for Stories—Stories Begin Here brings together leading artists and communities to cultivate a dynamic culture of storytelling.

Stories Begin Here aims to build a vibrant, long-lasting culture of new writing in WA where diverse voices are not just heard, but celebrated. Through collaboration, mentorship, and community, we’re making space for powerful stories to emerge.

For beginners and community members new to writing: Welcoming weekly sessions designed to build confidence and creative skills in a flexible, supportive environment—no experience needed.

For emerging and community writers: A space to engage with dramatic literature through shared reading and discussion, fostering deeper storytelling knowledge.

For emerging playwrights: An intensive workshop offering foundational tools and guidance for those beginning their playwriting journey.

For emerging and early-career screenwriters: Workshops focused on developing authentic storytelling & strong narrative craft for the screen.

For mid-career artists and theatre-makers: Keynote sessions led by national & international dramaturgs, delivered online to ensure broad access and professional development.

For experienced playwrights: A program offering mentorship and artistic support for three WA writers who are developing ambitious new works.
